The Underground Ark | Artsound review

Bruce Hoogendoorn, whose new play, ‘The Underground Ark’, I saw on opening night last Thursday is a Canberra playwright who has already written several successful plays.  You’ll remember seasons here in Canberra of ‘The Clever Country’ in 2010, ‘Simon Says’ in 2009 and ‘The Role Model’ in 2008  His plays have gone on to have a life beyond Canberra with productions by interstate companies, even winning a workshop for one of them with Edward Albee of ‘Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?’ fame.  I’m not surprised at this because he does all the right things to get his plays out there.

Written and produced by Bruce Hoogendoorn. Long Run Theatre Productions. Directed by Fiona Fox. The Courtyard Theatre, Canberra Theatre Centre. 13–23 June 2012

Premised on a government priority for 400 handpicked Australians to see runaway climate change through in a large underground shelter, this deft play explores the survival of politics and human nature through rigorous indoctrination and committee selection of breeding pairs.  Its ending leaves the audience with several questions to debate, but it moves along and is penned beautifully.

The play is fortunate to have very competent actors.  In particular, Ethan Gibson was most… read more »

The Clever Country City News reviewA STATISTIC revealing that university science enrolments had dropped by 3000 in five years provided the inspiration for this biting satire by Canberra Playwright Bruce Hoogendoorn.

Cataloguing the travails of scientist Andrew Dean (Bruce Kavanagh), who invents a machine supposedly capable of stimulating minds to improve the ability to draw and play music, provides Hoogendoorn with plenty of grist for wicked comment on the ethics of the science, fashion, advertising and television industries.

The Clever Country | The Canberra Times Review

The Clever Country The Canberra Times reviewBruce Hoogendoorn’s The Clever Country is a neatly sardonic piece taking declining Australian university science enrolments as its starting point. Research scientist Andrew (Brian Kavanah) is happily experimenting with a machine that can apparently improve the subject’s artistic ability and is using it on Philip (Clinton McRobert) to help him improve his guitar playing.

But his funding is pulled by boss Stephanie (Fiona Fox) because results are too slow in coming. However, a visit from the wonderfully ignorant and loud Minuster for Science (David Villanti) and his devious PA.

Cromwell Road Theatre, Melbourne; Boobook Theatre Company
Friday, May 15, 2009. General Performance. Review by BARBARA CURZON-SIGGERS.

Season closed.

BOObook Theatre company tackle the issue of celebrity sportsman misconduct with intelligence, verve and talent.

Bruce Hoogendoorn’s The Role Model is a witty play about an Olympic swimmer, Scott, who sleeps with his friend’s wife, and doesn’t seem to grasp the ideas of or emotions of, remorse or guilt. Sound familiar? Yep! During a week where we saw the nastiest side of NSW rugby league – and with Wayne Carey still hovering in the background – the theatre of BOObook… read more »
